A local guide

Arugam Bay

Sri Lanka's east-coast surf town. A short guide from your local clinic.

This page is currently available in English only — translation in progress.

Arugam Bay sits on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka, about 320 kilometres from Colombo and roughly four kilometres south of the town of Pottuvil. It's a small, slow place — basically one road tracing the curve of the beach, with surf shops, guesthouses, and restaurants strung along it. The population is around five thousand. The economy used to be fishing, and still partly is, but today it runs on surfing and tourism between April and October each year.

The bay is mixed Muslim, Tamil, and Sinhalese, and you'll hear all three languages spoken on the same street. English is widely understood in tourist areas. The community is used to international visitors — surfers from Israel, Australia, and Europe, backpackers from across the world, families on East-coast holidays, and increasingly Gulf and Indian travelers. Arugam Bay has hosted international surf competitions and is the only WSL-sanctioned competition venue in Sri Lanka.

Best time to visit

The surf season runs from April to October. This is when the east coast catches the swell that the southwest monsoon pushes around the southern tip of Sri Lanka. Offshore winds, dry weather, and consistent waves. The peak months are June, July, and August, when Main Point fires almost daily.

Outside the season (November to March), the east coast is rainier, the surf is smaller and messier, and many businesses close or operate at reduced hours. The town empties out. If you're not here for surf — if you want a quiet beach, wildlife, or warm-weather travel without the crowds — November to March can be a beautiful, cheaper time to visit. The bay is genuinely calm. The Dispensary is open all year, 24 hours a day, regardless of season.

For surfers, by skill level:

  • · Beginners: April, May, September, October — smaller, gentler waves at Baby Point and Whiskey Point.
  • · Intermediate: Whole season, including peak. Main Point on smaller swell days, Pottuvil Point, Whiskey Point.
  • · Advanced: June through August at Main Point and Peanut Farm for the biggest, cleanest waves.

Getting here

From Colombo — about 6 to 8 hours by road. The route most travelers take is Colombo → Ratnapura → Embilipitiya → Pottuvil. Hire a car and driver (around USD 80–120 one-way, can be split between four people) or take a bus from Colombo's Pettah bus stand to Pottuvil, then a short tuk-tuk to Arugam Bay. The bus is cheap but takes 9–10 hours.

From Ella — a popular route for travelers doing the hill country first. About 4–5 hours by car. The drive cuts through Buduruwagala and Lahugala National Park. Watch for wild elephants on the road at dusk.

From Trincomalee or Batticaloa (north) — about 3–5 hours, scenic coastal road.

Train: there's no train direct to Arugam Bay. The closest station is Batticaloa, about 3 hours north by road.

Flights: there's an airstrip at Ampara, but most international visitors fly into Colombo (CMB / Bandaranaike) and travel overland.

Sri Lanka entry — visa and ETA basics

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival. Since October 2025, you can no longer get the ETA on arrival — it must be applied for online at eta.gov.lk before you fly. The tourist ETA gives a 30-day stay with double entry, extendable up to 270 days through the Department of Immigration. Indian and several other nationalities currently have a free ETA fee; others pay a small fee. Always use the official government portal (eta.gov.lk), not third-party look-alikes that charge unnecessary middleman fees.

You need: a passport valid at least six months from arrival, a return or onward ticket, accommodation details, and sufficient funds. Approval usually comes by email within 24–72 hours.
